Serving Saint Paul

Saint Paul is a taller city than Minneapolis, and heat behaves very differently over three storeys than it does over two.

Saint Paul houses tend to be older, taller and on hillier ground. The recurring problem here is vertical: stack effect over three floors, and a top floor that has never once been the same temperature as the rest of the house.

The houses we work on in Saint Paul

Sizing, ductwork and the right equipment all follow from what kind of house it is, so this is where every job actually starts.

Queen Anne and Victorian, 1885 to 1905

Three full storeys, tall ceilings, an enormous stairwell acting as a chimney, and a third floor that bakes in summer and freezes in winter. The stack effect in these houses is not a subtlety, it is the dominant force.

Mac-Groveland duplex, 1915 to 1930

Up-down duplexes with either one system doing both units or two systems fighting each other through a shared stairwell. Zoning and honest conversations with both parties are most of the job.

Highland Park tudor, 1925 to 1940

Steep roofs, plaster over lath, small windows, and often a beautifully built house with ductwork squeezed into whatever space was left. Ice dams are a recurring issue on those roof pitches.

What Saint Paul actually calls us about

In rough order of frequency, from our own dispatch board rather than from a keyword list.

  1. The third floor

    Ten degrees off the rest of the house in both directions. The fix is almost never a bigger system: it is dedicated supply and return up there, or a ductless head with its own thermostat.

  2. Stack effect

    Warm air rising through a tall open stairwell pulls cold air in at the bottom of the house. You feel it as a cold first floor and a hot top floor at the same time.

  3. Ice dams

    Steep old roofs, heat leaking into the attic, and meltwater refreezing at the eaves. Where that heat is coming from uninsulated ducts in the attic, that part is ours to fix.

  4. Where to put an outdoor unit

    Narrow lots, hillside grades and tight side yards. Placement takes real thought here, and getting it wrong means noise in a neighbour’s bedroom.

Things that only matter here

Saint Paul lots are frequently narrower than Minneapolis lots and the side yards are tighter, which changes where a condenser or heat pump can legally and sensibly go. On a hillside street it also changes where the snow slides off the roof, and we would rather not put twelve thousand dollars of equipment under that.

The hills matter for scheduling too. On an ice day, Ramsey Hill and the West Seventh grades are genuinely slower to get up, and we will tell you that when we book rather than quietly running late.
