The ten nights that decide everything

Design temperature here is 20 below. A furnace that coped fine in November can fail on the first night it is genuinely asked to work, usually somewhere around 2am. This is also the season where a cracked heat exchanger stops being an abstraction, so a winter visit always includes a combustion test and a carbon monoxide check.

March and April are the quiet weeks. Nothing is running hard, the driveway is clear, and a coil that has spent a winter collecting dust can be cleaned properly rather than in a hurry. This is when replacements happen without anybody sleeping in a cold house, and when rebate paperwork has time to move at its own pace.

Twin Cities summers are short, humid and genuinely hard on a house. The complaint is almost never the whole house, it is the upstairs, and the cause is almost never tonnage, it is airflow. Undersized returns, a closed damper, a filter three MERV grades too fine for the blower. We check that before anybody talks about a bigger unit.

September is the single most useful appointment of the year. Everything gets tested while there is still time to order a part, the humidifier comes back online before the air turns dry, and the filter goes in fresh. A furnace that fails in September is an inconvenience. The same failure in January is a very different day.

The question everyone in Minnesota is asking

Yes, a heat pump works here. The interesting part is the balance point.

A cold-climate heat pump keeps making useful heat well below zero. What changes as it gets colder is how much. At some outdoor temperature its output stops covering what your house is losing, and that crossing point is the balance point. Above it the heat pump carries the house on its own. Below it, backup heat picks up the difference.

In a Minneapolis house that number usually lands somewhere between 5 and 15 degrees, which covers the overwhelming majority of the heating season. The ten or so nights a year that go below it are what your furnace is for. Set up as dual fuel, the two hand off to each other and you never notice.
