Furnace repair

The house is going the wrong way. We can usually be there today.

Same-day heat calls across Minneapolis and Saint Paul, every day of the heating season. We diagnose first, tell you the price, and only then pick up a tool.

What it is doing, and what that usually means

Four patterns cover most winter calls. Reading this before you phone will not fix anything, but it will make the conversation faster.

It runs, then stops, then runs again, and never gets there

Short cycling

Usually a flame sensor coated in a film of oxide, a limit switch tripping on high temperature because airflow is restricted, or a filter that has not been changed in a year. The flame sensor is a ten minute job. The airflow one is worth diagnosing properly because it shortens the life of the heat exchanger.

Three clicks, a whirr, and then nothing

Failed ignition

A hot surface igniter that has finally cracked, a stuck pressure switch, or a blocked condensate drain on a high-efficiency unit backing up into the trap. All three are common, all three are same-day parts, and the last one is often just a hose full of sludge.

The blower runs constantly but the air is cool

No burn, fan on

The control board has called for heat, failed to prove it, and gone into a lockout with the fan running to clear residual heat. There will be a fault code flashing on the board behind the door. Tell us the pattern on the phone and we will often know the part before we arrive.

A smell of something like formaldehyde, or headaches in the house

Stop and call

Get everybody out, leave the door open, and call the gas utility first, then us. This is the one symptom that is not a scheduling question. Do not wait for a convenient appointment.

What actually happens when we turn up

No hourly meter, no work starting before you have agreed a number.

  1. You describe it on the phone

The fault code, the noise, whether the thermostat has power, when it last worked. Half the time this tells us which part to put on the van.

  2. We diagnose, then we stop

Combustion analysis, static pressure, electrical checks and a look at the heat exchanger with a camera where we can get one in. Then we come and talk to you before touching anything else.

  3. You get a number, not a rate

A price for the repair, and if it is a close call, a price for the repair beside a price for replacement, so you can compare them properly rather than under pressure at 9pm.

  4. You decide, and we do it

If it is a part we carry, that day. If it is not, we will tell you honestly when it can be here and leave you with safe temporary heat if you need it.

Furnace repair questions

How quickly can you get here if there is no heat?

Same day through the heating season, seven days a week. If the house is below 60 degrees, or there is an infant, an older adult or someone unwell in it, say so when you call and you move to the front of the queue. Comfort plan members sit ahead of the general queue as standard.

How much does a furnace repair cost?

The common ones, a flame sensor, an igniter, a pressure switch, a condensate trap, land in the low hundreds fitted. Inducer motors and control boards are higher. What matters more than the range is that you get the actual number for your actual fault before we start, and you can say no.

My furnace is 19 years old. Repair or replace?

We will give you both prices and the reasoning, and we will not pretend the decision is obvious when it is not. Broadly: if the repair is over about a third of a replacement, the unit is past 15 years, and the heat exchanger is showing its age, replacement usually wins. If it is a 60 dollar sensor on an otherwise sound 18 year old furnace, fix the sensor.

What is a cracked heat exchanger and why does everyone mention it?

It is a split in the metal wall that separates combustion gases from the air you breathe, and it is the one furnace fault that genuinely is a safety matter rather than a comfort one. It is also the phrase most often used to scare somebody into a same-night replacement. We photograph or video what we find and show it to you, every time, and we will red-tag a unit when it needs it and not before.

Do you work on any brand?

Yes. Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Rheem, Goodman, Amana, Bryant, York, American Standard, Daikin, and the older stuff underneath them. Parts availability varies more than skill does, and we will tell you upfront if a part is going to be difficult.

No heat right now?

Call and tell us what the thermostat says and what the furnace is doing. If we can talk you through a reset over the phone, we will, and it will not cost you anything.
